About the Event

Tourism both degrades the environment and creates value to conserve it.  The South African Blue Flag Programme has encouraged coastal managers over the past 20 years to voluntary improve local ecological management, encouraged sustainable behaviour and continues to create social value through youth job creation and environmental training. This talk will address some negative impacts of coastal tourism, why and how the international Blue Flag programme was able to create a sustainable coastal management regime, improving local ecological management and encouraging sustainable behaviours. It will also share the impact of the Tourism Blue Flag Project which trained 400 local youths to enter the tourism industry with sound environmental and sustainable development training. Lastly, you'll hear about things you as a tourist can do to support responsible and sustainable local sustainable tourism, through engaging with eco-labels!
